Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. This saying definitely holds for Candelaria, a ‘secret’ cocktailbar and one of our favorite cocktail spots in Paris, situated in the Northern Marais (or NoMa). The first time we wanted to visit Candelaria, we accidentally passed the place because we were looking out for a super trendy spot. After double checking the address we indeed found Candelaria on the window, next to a large pink neon ‘TACOS’-sign.
In the front is a tiny taquería (or Mexican canteen), serving delicious local dishes such as tacos de carnitas (roasted pork) or rajas con queso (peppers with melted cheese). We actually went back another time to also try the food as the first time we had already eaten at Buvette. Don’t expect a full dinner here as the place is very low key, but it’s perfect if you’re looking for a quick bite.
And for the cocktails: If you pass the kitchen with the local Mexican chef, there’s a secret door. Go through it and you’ll find a hidden bar with low ceilings, cave like walls and dimmed lights breathing an intimate atmosphere. The place is always packed with a fun, young crowd so you can be sure of a good night when going here. Now back to what Candeleria is famous for: the impressive list of tequilas and rums they have on the menu. So look out not to try them all, otherwise you’ll be having a tough next day. If you’re with a (small) group, make sure to try out the 4-6 persons punch. Otherwise, from the cockail menu the Dino Sour is highly recommendable (vodka, pear liquor, honey, egg white and lemon) or if you’re a gin fanatic like Yore, ask the bartender for the Reserve List with 16 types of gin and 12 special gin cocktails!
So for a taco and tequila filled evening, head over to Candelaria! Reservations, which you can make here, can only be made for a table between 18:00 and 22:00 and up to a maximum of five people.
